A Woman's Metamorphosis

What do we know about metamorphosis? I know that it is a rite of passage for a caterpillar to become a butterfly. I know that while the caterpillar is in its cocoon, its body is transformed into a butterfly. I know that in order for this butterfly to take flight, it must emerge from the safety of a closed, dark, protective space. I know that some force is required to break free. I know that although each stage is instinctive to this creature, at any point it could choose to ignore what is required to fulfill its life cycle.

Like the caterpillar, we have phases in our life where we shelter from the storms of life; stay in dark places because of its familiarity and comfort; wrestle with the possibility of change; and launch into new opportunities and experiences. Some of us never emerge from our own cocoons because of fear of the unknown or a distrust of our own instincts. Some of us launch prematurely because we were too impatient with the growth process. Others successfully launch but spend their entire lives searching for a new cocoon, missing the opportunities for growth awaiting them.

But more than ever, many of us are crippled by fear. The courage to transform our lives is a process. How long it takes, the level of difficulty, and the battle scars we gain will vary by person. Patience with ourselves and the process is the first step to a transformative experience. Second, is being surrounded by wise counsel, that is, individuals who can speak truth in love and support you in your highs and lows.

Like the butterfly discovering her identity and strength, I hope my blog will provide each of you with community, encouragement, wisdom, and the tools to launch into your destiny.
